The staff at Williamstown Veterinary Hospital are happy to help with many aspects of rabbit and guinea pig preventative health and care
For rabbits:
Rabbits should be vaccinated for calicivirus (also known at Viral Haemorrhagic Disease). Two initial vaccinations are required a month apart followed by annual boosters.
Desexing is recommended for both male and female rabbits. Female rabbits have an extremely high incidence of uterine cancer as they get older, which is prevented by early desexing. Castration of males is also recommended to reduce aggressive and territorial behaviour which develops during puberty.
Rabbits, as with other domestic pets, can also carry fleas. There are some flea treatments which are NOT safe for rabbits. Advantage topical flea treatment is recommended by this practice. Other products may be recommended for mite infestation.
For guinea pigs:
Currently, no vaccinations are currently recommended, however, advice on general health and husbandry can be discussed with our vets.
